RCEM survey finds two thirds of patients believe mental health services for children in emergency departments are not up to scratch

10 July 2018

RCEM has published a survey from around the UK of Mental Health Services for children and young people (CYP) presenting to Emergency Departments (ED) in crisis.

53% of ED respondents felt that services were poor and 12% felt services were awful and they had concerns about safety.

The results add to the evidence that services and facilities for CYP in MH crisis are woefully lacking.

Long waits for assessment and admission to Mental Health beds, inadequate surroundings in which CYP are managed and unnecessary admissions to hospital were the biggest themes.

Suggestions are made for how services could be improved for this group of patients.
