The role of being a College Examiner is a privilege that carries with it the responsibility of maintaining the highest standards, as expected by patients, candidates and Members and Fellows.

The College welcomes applications from all members of the College who meet the eligibility criteria. There are four grades of examiner:

  • Consultant Grade Examiner (UK)
  • Consultant Grade Examiner (Overseas Centres)
  • SAS Grade Examiner
  • Question Writer

Full details of the roles and responsibilities of each grade of examiner, the person specifications and application form are available in the Examiner Regulations pack.

Flexible Examiner Opportunities at RCEM

Have you planned to examine but been unable to justify the time away from home?  Want to give something back to the specialty but live far away from London and find it hard to commit to travel? Always wanted to examine but not a fan of OSCEs and SAQs?...

Then QIP examining might be for you…

This month sees the end of the QIP and CTR Vivas and as of this Autumn we will be embarking on a model of remote marking for FRCEM candidates QIP submissions.  We need to recruit a number of willing individuals to join a national pool of QIP examiners who would support the College in marking these often high quality pieces of interesting work.  Prospective examiners would be asked to commit to a number of days of QIP examining per year of their choosing, where 1 day equates to 6 QIP manuscripts to mark (each QIP takes an average of 1 hour to mark).  No travel required and manuscripts can be marked flexibly by you at a time of your convenience during a 4 week marking window each Spring/Autumn.  RCEM would treat these days in exactly the same way as any other examiner commitment in terms of external duty applications for employing trusts.

No previous examiner experience required and QI experience not necessary, experienced QI assessors will be available for remote support.

An optional annual QI examiner update will be hosted by RCEM, but other than this all examiner duties can be completed from the comfort of your own home/office.

Interested parties please contact Susannah Grant (Susannah.grant@rcem.ac.uk) or Ian Gurney (i.gurney@nhs.net) for more details.
